Cardiovascular diseases include coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction (heart attack), stroke, hypertension (high blood pressure), arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), rheumatic heart disease and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the United States, for both men and women. It claims more lives each year than the next five leading causes of death combined (cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, accidents, diabetes mellitus, influenza and pneumonia). In addition, stroke, the nation's number three killer, is also the leading cause of severe long-term disability.
Fourteen percent of all inpatient admissions each year are cardiovascular-related.
Probable causes include these risk factors: current smokers, elevated blood cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes.
